yesterday, in an episode of jonathan creek, there was a little reminder that the title of one of james joyce's books is finnegans wake.
not finnegan's wake.
i suppose i always knew that. i'm sure it is/was stored somewhere in the back of my mind. but then why is making the same mistake so remarkably difficult to avoid?
& would telling you why there is no apostrophe, give away too much about certain plot events?

oh and before you ask.. no i never read it from cover to cover and at the moment i don't even own a copy of it.

That's the sort of thing I'd pick up on :)

I never read it either, although I saw a movie of it as a kid.. a LONG time ago!

yes i think it is.
it's a bit like those old fashioned mystery novels.

these episodes are from a couple of years ago. they rerun them on bbc prime. not sure if you have that where you live..

The inference is that it could be multiple Finnegans, not possessive Finnegan's. Including the apostrophe is one of the surest signs that a person who is discussing the book doesn't know what they're talking about.

Joyce = brilliant. Although The Wake is practically unreadable, unless out loud, and then it seems to make perfect sense. It's almost a completely new language, boiled down to the pure phoneticism that allows communication.

Good times.

i know some see this book as one big joke. i don't think it is. he wouldn't have spent so much time on it if it was. as an experiment or even just to prove he could pull it off.. from an artistic point of view that can never be a failure..
