the oscars

i think it's ridiculous. we can get more than a hundred channels on our television and there's only one that will be screening the academy awards this night. it also took me a while to find that one. it's on pro7, a german channel that i think i never watched before. it starts in a few minutes..

ok i shouldn't complain. a friend living in the united kingdom told me she can only see the highlights. live coverage of the show will only be on skymovies, a pay channel not that many people have.

whether you like it or not, i'm going to give you my oscar picks now. i chose a winner in 8 of the 18 categories. most of the movies i have only seen clips of, please keep that in mind. so here is a list of who i want to win and my prediction of who i think the academy will pick:

my choice: good night & good luck
will win: brokeback mountain

best director
my choice: steven spielberg for munich
will win: ang lee for brokeback mountain

wow your predictions were pretty accurate.
that being said i was as disappointed as i usually am with the oscars and its indulgence in films that cater to simple-minded white american ideology... usually i take interest in the best foreign film and best documentary categories, but even there the winners were rather disappointing. my choices for those two would have been paradise now and darwin's nightmare.

p.s. marry me

yes i got most of them right, but that doesn't necessarily mean that i know a lot about film. maybe the academy has become more and more conservative and predictable..

if paradise now was the best film in its category - i don't know because i haven't seen the others - it should have won. but we all knew it wouldn't stand a chance.
maybe i'll write a little about that in another entry..

Wasn't a dutch movie nominated for best foreign language film?

yes, well sort of..
the palestinian director of paradise now has been living in the netherlands for years.

Good job! But you didn't predict best song--wasn't that the most fun of the night?

haha yes.. a friend of mine who is (or used to be) into rap calls it typical decent white man rap..

i did like jon stewart's comment though, which went something like this:
"for those at home keeping score, it's martin scorsese 0, three6mafia 1"
i think that said it all..
