sweepstake

there's this thing going on at the office. i believe the english word for it is sweepstake.

it's pretty simple. there are 32 participants (yes, including me) - one for every team in the world cup. each person pays 10 euro. if your team wins the final, you get all the money that's in the pot. you can't choose the country you like, it's the luck of the draw whether you get a good one or not. guess what i got?

australia!

Great country, pretty decent chances for the second round, but the cup will be a tough one.

@534mu5:
the matches are at 1500, 1800 and 2100 over here, so i usually miss the first one because of work. but when it's an important one, i can always stay up half the night to watch the repeat.. :)

Sweepstakes is close enough. There are all sorts of office betting games. Usually they involve you picking who you think will win a game or set of games in this case. Having the team assigned to you by randomly is more like a drawing for a door prize except you have to wait to see if you have the winning ticket until the end of the World Cup.

Australia is not likely to be the winner -- but you never know. Look at the US's group. No one would have expected Ghana to beat the Czech Rep, nor the US to draw with Italy (9 men to 10).

So keep the faith, the boys from down under may come out on top!

no it's not likely that they'll win the cup, but i can see them reach the quarter-finals. ok i said that before this started, but they could still manage that.

and hey, stranger things have happened:
who expected greece to win euro 2004?

Usually called a "betting pool" in the US. Sweepstakes is close enough. Good for you on getting Australia. I have Ghana.
