casimir pulaski day

it never occurred to me that there really is a casimir pulaski day. i suppose i assumed sufjan stevens just made it up. however, i discovered today that there is also a song by the band big black called kasimir s. pulaski day. the only thing both songs have in common though, might be that neither of them is really about the guy..

it is a regional united states holiday celebrated on the first monday of march to commemorate casimir pulaski, a revolutionary war cavalry officer. apparently illinois is the only state to officially recognize casimir pulaski day. i guess that means you get the day off from school there? :)

Yep, it's a state holiday here in Illinois. The observed holiday often lands on my birthday (which is also March 4), so I often got a day off of school as a present. :-)

It's definitely an Illinois thing... especially a Chicago thing. There's a HUGE Polish population in Chicago / Chicagoland suburbs, which is why it's a big deal out here. I'd never heard of the guy until I started working for school districts out here in Illinois.

We don't officially get the day off in my district, but we do tend to have the last Friday in February or the first Friday in March as a countrywide institute day, so the kids do get the weekend off...
