ray

you've probably heard by now that ray charles has died. a talented guy whose influence on music was unmistakable. he sort of broke down the walls between all kinds of musical genres: jazz, blues, rock, country..

everyone you talk to can name a couple of his songs, but nobody has any of his records. and that includes me.. i expected to find one or two tracks by him on a couple of blues samplers that i have, but no. there's muddy waters, john lee hooker, howlin' wolf, elmore james, sonny boy williamson, bonnie raitt.. and screamin' jay hawkins, clifton chenier, art neville and lots of lesser-known people. ..professor longhair!

some of it is good for when you're in the mood to kill yourself (that's when you want to hear about people being worse off than you) and other stuff is just great party music.. (photo: AP)

I think it is a sad loss to the music world. You are right, he seemed to be one of those names everyone knew. Having said that, none of his songs are on any my CD's either.

I suppose he may not have allowed them to get on there, but I guess we will probably never know.

Absolutely! I have been a fan of your journal for a while, but this an unexpected surprise cos I know most of your entries are 'free to view'.

Thank you :-)
