too old to die young!

on my birthday this year i couldn't get any time off work, not even a few hours. the bastards!
so when i got home my girlfriend had prepared a small dinner. her parents were there and so were mine. plus five of my (our) friends. one of them was marjolijn. she's about the only person with a livejournal (author_author) that i've also met in real life.

we had baked risotto with tuna and courgettes. and for those still hungry after that, little tomato and pesto pizzas.

some of the presents i got:
books:
adriaan van dis: indische duinen
v.s. naipaul: a house for mr biswas
my parents wanted to give me brideshead revisited on dvd, but my dad couldn't get it in the shops. then he wanted to order it on amazon.com but fortunately he told me about that first. there's a region 1 code on that one, so it probably would have been useless over here. there's another edition that they have on amazon.co.uk, without all the extra stuff, but at least it has the right encoding.

what else?
shampoo
nail polish
two people gave me money which i donated to help the victims of the tsunami. not to appear ungrateful, i asked them first if that was alright, but of course it was.

the next day i discovered that mad_sharpei had given me a paid account here on livejournal. thank you very much. now if i could only speak russian fluently. oh yes and italian, japanese, portuguese..

blooz69 asked what it is like to have your birthday so soon in the new year. i remembered i had talked about that some time ago. you can find it here.

happy new year to you too.
yes, after you've stirred the lot for a couple of minutes, you put the whole thing in the oven and bake the risotto for another 30 minutes or so.
