i'm sure you all know that big brother (the television series) was a dutch invention. (hey don't thank blame me!) we've had four instalments so far, with each year less people watching it. that's probably why it hasn't been on tv here for almost three years. i stopped watching it myself during the second season.

and now it's back. big brother 5 starts on september 5th and we're told it's really back to basics. i guess that means they are getting rid of all the stuff that wasn't part of the program in the first place.

there's one thing i've heard about it that's quite disturbing. if it all works out, one of the contestants will be a woman who is six or seven months pregnant and who will eventually give birth live on the show! the saddest thing is that they can probably find a number of women mad enough to do this.

That is really freaky. Unfortunately they're up to BB5 here, but the ratings have been atrocious, so hopefully there's no BB6.

i thought the first big brother was quite interesting from a psychological point of view. and it was all new, the contestants had no idea of the impact it all had on tv..

The first ones always have that about them... but tv stations tend to run them until they die.. and from the 2nd one onwards, people have the whole "I'm on tv" attitude and it just comes across as being really... fake. It's just another (long) game show now, rather than really being an interesting fly-on-the-wall view of a small subsection of society.

I've found BB in the UK to be vapid entertainment, and sometimes good on that level but rarely on any other. This year it was filled with slightly outrageous and entirely annoying/vindictive/childish/nasty people. While this might have made the experiment more interesting (think schoolyard -- even dragging the 41-yr-old Derek down to that level), it's miserable to watch.

However, through a bit of randomness, I started watching Australian Big Brother via bittorrent downloads. While those housemates certainly had nasty and/or bitchy sides, the are generally civil. I've found Oz BB to be interesting, funny, and compelling. Maybe it's just that all Australians are that way so watching it on TV isn't that fun :)

With respect to a pregnant woman giving birth live -- uh, well, it's real already. But perhaps not something I want to watch unless it's *my* reality.

I can't say that i even like "Reality Shows" they are quite the opposite of what they say they are, real.
