belgian things

the 25th anniversary of the death of jacques brel
see and hear for yourself, here and there.

i've seen a documentary about brel on belgian television as well as an old tv show with brel singing.
people call him a chansonnier and a singer-songwriter.
and is it folk or cabaret?
i would say: does it matter? who cares?
i think he was a great poet, his singing intense and passionate. the feeling you get listening to the words, and the way he sings them..

something else from belgium.
a friend sent me this joke by email:
quelle différence y a-t-il entre un américain et un yogourt?
au bout d'un temps, le yogourt développe une certaine forme de culture..

i agree that it doesn't matter what people decide to call him...and besides i think all those singers organizing a concert and singing his songs is a very bad idea.i mean it's HIS songs, they won't sing it as well as he did anyway...
what i like about jacques brel, is how he didn't need the music, the ones who listened needed the music.there's a song, although i don't remember the title, it's called something like "ces gens-là"; well the music was SO unnecessary! i wonder what he'd sound like without any music at all...

and hey, i didn't know you're speaking french!!! or i knew and forgot ...oops :p

yes there is a song called ces gens-là. i don't know it by heart but here is the text:

i don't really speak that much french. i can read it - though i have to look up a word sometimes. and i can understand people who speak french - if they don't talk too fast :)
i don't usually write french myself - i'm too afraid of making lots of mistakes..
